Now working with its second cohort, Scale Midlands, run by PwC in partnership with the West Midlands Growth Company, provides professional business support and access to expert networks to enable the region’s start-up businesses to grow and thrive.

The Scale Midlands 10-week programme will support 10 enterprise scale-ups expand in and beyond the region by giving businesses access to new customers, channels to market and an extensive business community. The programme includes events to give founders the opportunity to meet and pitch to C-level executives, decision makers and attend group masterclasses to gain insights from PwC and industry experts, as well as individual coaching and business support.

Roy Meredith, senior business development manager at the West Midlands Growth Company, said:

“The West Midlands is on the cusp of a new wave of enterprise. Its young talentpool, affordable and flexible office space and its 5G testbed status, combine to create vast amounts of potential for new and growing enterprises. Birmingham - at the heart of the region - has topped the list as the UK’s most entrepreneurial city outside London for five consecutive years. The city has more incubators and accelerator programmes than any regional city, fostering a thriving community of start-ups.

“PwC’s Scale Midlands programme will build on this supportive ecosystem, providing both start-ups ad scale-ups with a unique opportunity to harness expertise from across the region. It is an invaluable programme and fantastic opportunity for savvy entrepreneurs looking to broaden their skillset.”

Scale Midlands alumni and founder of enploy, Jon Allen, said:

“It was an invaluable experience to meet senior executives and gain access to the network and expertise that Scale presents. Not only did we create important new business leads but it also pushed me outside of my comfort zone and forced me to improve my presentation skills - which will be essential as we look to scale the business.”

PwC director and sponsor of the Scale Midlands programme, Matt Palmer, added:

“The Midlands boasts one of the fastest-growing business startup scenes outside of London, and has one of the largest tech clusters in the UK, including startups covering fintech, AI, Health and software development.

“We are home to a diverse business community of scale-up businesses, as well as established UK and international businesses. Scale Midlands is a platform to bring these businesses together to give start-ups access to an experienced network to obtain expertise, relationships and client connections.

“Whilst there is an initial fee to join the programme unlike normal incubator initiatives Scale doesn’t take any equity from businesses, yet it provides invaluable opportunities through PwC’s global network, the opportunity to leverage the experience of our partners and directors, and access to new client opportunities.”
